Panera Bread Complaint

Panera Bread manager Harold Green threatened me. - Customer dining experience

August 31, 2014 around 3pm - Raleigh Police called. Store manager Mr. Green (Harold?) threatened me. Here's what happened. I am a regular Panera Bread customer, not that it matters in this case.

I had my order and sat down at a window table to eat. A rather large woman was standing beside the table behind me and she was loudly berating a young woman saying that it was her table, but she had not put anything there to indicate that it was. The young woman was soft-spoken and clearly being dominated by this very obnoxious, loud person who just would not quit the berating. I waited and waited for her to stop. She didn't. I couldn't continue eating while listening to this, so I turned and said "Will you please shut-up so I can eat my lunch?" True, I should not have said "shut-up" and true, I should have just gone for the manager, but I was too irritated at this point to take those more sensible steps. The obnoxious woman turned to me and said, "Don't tell me to shut-up" whereupon, I got up and said, "Im going to get the manager."

Before I took a step, another woman (both black and I am white if it matters and I think it does in this case), chimed in to me and scolded me for saying "shut-up". I told her it was not her concern, whereupon she continued with her verbal moral outrage. I finally got the manager, a Mr. Green (Harold I believe) and told him a woman was making a distubance and I could not eat. The obnoxious woman had followed me to the counter and was causing quite a ruckus at the order line.

The manager said to go back to where we were. We did that. I told him what had happened and that I wanted my money refunded and I would leave. He said "OK". Both black women were verbally attacking me my this time as I made my way to the register. The soft-spoken young lady wasn't part of this at all. I don't even know what happened to her.

I was waiting for my refund and the morally indignant woman walked up and started in on me again. I told the manager who was standing right that "She won't stop." He then came around the register and got up in MY face and pushed his chest against me and accidentally spit in my face. He said, "If you don't leave right now, I am calling the police."

Well, that did it for me. First, I was the victim and now suddenly he is making me out to be the trouble-maker - I was actively leaving the restaurant when he did this. So I said, "No, I will call the police which I did."

Four police cars and 5 cops descended on the restaurant. I just told the "911" operator that there was a misunderstanding at Panera North Hills and that the Manager threatened me by saying he was going to call the police to get me and I would like a resolution of that issue."

The police got my statement and then went inside and Lord only knows what version was said in there - the two black women were stil inside with the manager. The police and manager came out and the manager descrbed what happened to me and he got several key elements wrong. We straightened those out and the police defused the stituation.

Be careful where you sit at Panera Bread and by all means never confront another customer directly even if he/she is right on top of you and causing you a lot of grief - you may end up the culprit, or worse, in jail.

Panera Bread has lost a customer forever. George Smith.
